Obituary For Dr. Ronald Syue-Lan Jan
Dr. Ronald Syue-Lang Jan (詹學郎) passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at the age of 87, surrounded by his loving family at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Known to his grandchildren as Agong, he was a humble and devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and physician who dedicated his life to his family and his patients.
Born on September 28, 1938, in Yuanlin, Taiwan, Dr. Jan earned his medical degree from National Taiwan University Medical School in 1964. He served as a military doctor on the island of Matsu from 1964 to 1966, then immigrated to the United States in 1966. He completed his internship in Yonkers, New York, and his surgical residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1968, he married Yvette, née Hsu (許月霞). He completed a cardiovascular fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in 1972.
In 1973, Dr. Jan established his private practice as a general surgeon in South Philadelphia, where he served a working-class community with quiet dedication for twenty-six years. He retired from private practice in 1999. He and Yvette then relocated to Hualien, Taiwan, where he joined Mennonite Christian Hospital, caring for vulnerable and indigenous aboriginal populations until his full retirement in 2005.
In his later years, Dr. Jan embraced the Christian faith following his experience with prostate cancer. His faith brought him comfort and peace. Outside of medicine, he enjoyed golf and traveling with his family.
Dr. Jan was a proud supporter of the Taiwanese American community throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs (FAPA), an organization committed to strengthening U.S.-Taiwan relations, and supported the Taiwan Center in Flushing, New York — reflecting his deep pride in his heritage and his commitment to the Taiwanese American community.
Dr. Jan traveled to Pennsylvania in May 2026 to attend the graduation of his grandchildren Kristen (詹佳珍) and Tyler (詹仁澤) from Penn State University. He passed peacefully shortly after at Geisinger Medical Center — the same institution where he had completed his fellowship more than fifty years earlier — with his family by his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Zhen-Xing Jan (詹振興); his mother, A-Qin Jan (詹阿勤); and his sister, Ai Jan (詹愛).
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Yvette Jan (許月霞); his brothers Syue-Fu (詹學富) and Steven Jan (詹學文);his son Dr. Louis Jan (詹君偉) and daughter-in-law Dr. Linda Wang (王玲玲), and their children Kristen (詹佳珍) and Tyler (詹仁澤); his son Dr. Jay Jan (詹君沛) and daughter-in-law Dr. Tina Tsai (蔡珮珊), and their children Ryan (詹仁宏) and Joshua (詹仁𠍇); and his son Gary Jan (詹君毅).
A memorial service will be announced at a future date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc., 42 W. Mahoning Street, Danville, PA 17821.
