Obituary For F. George P. Humbert, Sr.

F. George P. Humbert, Sr., 86, of Danville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, after at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. PA. He was born on April 4, 1937, in Miami, Arizona, in a hospital over a copper mine, a son of the late John J. Humbert, jr. and Evelyn Louise (Payne) Humbert.

They lived at several US Forest Service Ranger Stations in Arizona and New Mexico. After World War II they moved to Evelyn’s hometown of Jackson, Pennsylvania where they began acquiring a large tract of woodland. George and his older brother John worked as teenagers cutting pulpwood and quarrying flagstone to earn enough money for college. George graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a degree in education and with a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University.

In 1960, after graduation, he married Katherine Spangler. The newlyweds moved to Newville, PA where he taught special education for several years. They moved to Milton, Pennsylvania where George taught special education and junior high American history for 33 years. After starting a family, they bought a rundown farmette that they fixed up and raised three sons, dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, potatoes, tomatoes, and sweet corn.

In 1993 he retired from Milton Area School District and eventually built a house in Danville. His wife bought him a bandsaw which he used to build 140 bluebird houses. Seeing that it kept him out of her hair, she continued to buy him woodworking machines until his shop was full. He spent his time woodworking, traveling, gardening, hunting, fishing, and wandering around his beloved woods in Susquehanna County. George loved to organize ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) get togethers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Franklin Humbert, Jr. and his wife Amanda of New Providence, PA; James Humbert and his wife Tracy of Morrisville, PA; and Tom Humbert and his wife Lori of Danville, PA as well as eight grandchildren; Sarah, Rebecca, Chris, Danielle, Sam, Matt, Emma, and Harry. George is also survived by four great-grandchildren; Abby, Luke, Jordan, and one on the way as well as one brother; David Humbert and his wife Connie of Whitehall, PA and one sister; Louise Eastman and Ed of Rome, PA. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; John Humbert, III.
