Obituary For Florence McBride

Florence McBride, 96, of Riverside, PA, passed into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Geisinger Medical Center. She was born on August 19, 1927, in Larksville, Luzerne County, being a coal miner’s daughter of the late Elliott Miller and Margaret (Rinus) Miller.

'Flossy' graduated from Luzerne High School in 1945 and was a 1947 graduate of the Nesbitt Hospital School of Nursing, Kingston. Her working career spanned 25 years at the Danville State Hospital as a Registered Nurse where she supervised the Children’s Unit.

Florence was lovingly married in 1949 to the late James W. McBride for 48 years. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1997.

She was a longtime member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, Riverside and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Florence is survived by her son, James R. McBride and his wife Judy of Newtown, Pa and a stepdaughter Karen Moyer, Northumberland.

Florence’s most fond and pleasurable joys in her life were her three grandchildren, Jimmie (LeAnn), Melanie Rose (Trent) and Andy (Jenna) and especially her six great grandchildren, Vada Rose, Aiden, Lily, Jimmy, Audrey, and Beck. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Florence was an ‘old fashion grandmother’ where pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren could be found abundant throughout her home. A visit to Grammy’s house was always an adventure and a delightful treat unto itself. She had a remarkable and blessed way of making any child feel exceptionally special.

Throughout her life Florence was an avid Pinochle player with family and cherished friends. In between, she could be found reading and sharing romance novels, her passion that was no surprise to anyone.

Her fondness for shopping and attending dinner shows in Lancaster added a touch of excitement and adventure to her days.

Florence will be deeply missed by her family and friends but will live on in the hearts of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters, Elliott, Marguerite, Irene, Arlene, Elmer, Sally, Frankie, and Marilyn. She was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Nancy Metcalf.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Florence’s Life to be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 426 Sunbury Road, Riverside, PA 17868 with Pastor Greg Molter officiating. Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until 10:45am. The interment will follow at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
