Obituary For Franklin J. Rothermel, MD

Franklin J. “Frank” Rothermel, MD, 83, of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. He was born on April 3, 1941, in West Reading, PA, the son of the late John K. Rothermel, M.D. and Mildred E. Wilson Rothermel.

Frank graduated from Hamburg High School in 1959 and received his bachelor's degree in science from Penn State University in 1963. He graduated from Jefferson Medical School in 1967 and served his internship at the Harrisburg Hospital from 1967-1968.

He served his country with honor in the United States Army as a Major from July 5, 1972, to June 28, 1974, at the Kirk Army Hospital in Aberdeen, Maryland.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Essie J. Miller Rothermel. They were married on June 11, 1967.

Frank was employed by Hershey Medical Center as a Radiologist from 1974-1979 and by Geisinger Medical Center, Danville as a Radiologist for 32 years from 1979-2011, from where he retired.

He was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ in Danville, PA where he served in the Sanctuary Choir. With his love of singing, he also enjoyed being a member of the Danville Community Singers.

Throughout his life, Dr. Rothermel found joy in the simplicities of life - from his passion for photography and reading to his fondness for European cars. His active involvement in his children's sports activities, coaching soccer, playing baseball with his son and tennis with his daughter, illuminated his dedication to family and the bonds they shared.

He will be remembered by his family as being a great provider for them. His presence in the lives of his family members was a beacon of guidance and strength, offering much wisdom through his thoughtful questions and unwavering support and he will be missed dearly.

In addition to his wife, Frank is survived by one son; Jeffrey Rothermel and his wife Vicki of Wexford, PA and one daughter, Sheri Rothermel of State College, PA. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Rothermel. He is also survived by one brother; Jack Rothermel of Reading, PA and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Mark DonTigny in 2021 of cancer.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Franklin’s Life to be held on Friday, November 8th, 2024, at 12:00 Noon at Shiloh United Church of Christ, 512 Bloom Road, Danville, PA with the Reverend Mary B. Schmotzer officiating. Friends will be received from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM. Burial will be private in Zion’s Church Cemetery, Strausstown, PA

    Rest in peace, Dr. Rothermel. You were an excellent physician and a wonderful person. I worked with you from your arrival in 1979 and enjoyed every minute of it. I wish comfort to your family and eternal peace to you.

    Dr. Frank Rothermel was a special person as well as a fine physician. His standard as a kind and dedicated family man was always obvious, and in the field of medicine quite dedicated to his patients. He will be missed by all who got to know him over the years.
