Obituary For Helen Marie Gerringer

Helen Marie Gerringer, 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on December 27, 2025.

Helen was born on September 29, 1928, in Washingtonville, Pennsylvania, to the late Mary and Owen Hoffman. From an early age, she embodied a love of learning, service, and community, values that would guide her throughout her life.

Helen dedicated 32 years to education as a beloved teacher. Much of her career was spent teaching Kindergarten, where she touched countless young lives with her patience, kindness, and steady encouragement. She was also an active and committed member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), advocating for both students and fellow educators.

Beyond the classroom, Helen embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved to travel; cherished time spent with family and was a devoted sports fan-especially when it came to Penn State Football. Her pride in her family and her community was evident in everything she did.

Helen was an extraordinary sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered for her strength, warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for those around her.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Janet and Gary Hoffman of Riverside; Ray and Melanie Gerringer of Danville; Beth and Den Mertz of Danville; and daughter-in-law Deb Gerringer of Danville. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren and her 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Gerringer and her siblings, Jim Hoffman, Don Hoffman, and Charles Hoffman.

Helen's legacy lives on through the many students she taught, the family she cherished, and the community she helped shape. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

In keeping with Helen's wishes, she asked that no services be held. Her burial will take place privately at the convenience of the family.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 215 East Market Street, Danville, PA 17821 or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Visneski Funeral Home, Inc 42 West Mahoning Street Danville PA 17821. www.visneski.com.

Dear Beth and family, Please accept our heartfelt sympathy in the passing of your loved one. I'll always remember her when I dropped Chad off for her kindergarten class. He was screaming and yelling and your Mom just reached out and took him in class with the biggest smile on her face. A very endearing lady. God received another angel. Sharon and Jim Lewis

Helen Gerringer was a tremendous person as well as a great human being. I had the pleasure of knowing Mrs. Gerringer as my 1st grade teacher when I was a student @ Valley School probably around 1951(which the school is no longer) and her warmth which she shared with all of her students is still remembered by me as well as ( I am certain) of many others. She never hesitated to offer a smile when you would meet up with her. Thank you Mrs. Gerringer for being instrumental in my life! Will be keeping your family in my prayers. Judy (Kashner) Achy
