Obituary For Joseph A. Schott

Joseph A. Schott, 92, of Coal Township PA; formerly of Bloomsburg PA and a longtime resident of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Mountain View Manor in Coal Township PA. He was born June 9, 1931, in Danville PA, one of seven children of the late William and Alma Schmidt Schott.

Joseph graduated from Danville Area High School in 1949.

Joseph was a proud Army veteran, having served his country honorably in the Korean War. Enlisting on August 19, 1950, he dedicated two years of his life to the Army before being honorably discharged on May 20, 1952. Joseph attained the rank of M/Sgt, showcasing his commitment to serving his nation. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized with distinguished accolades, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After discharge, he went on to command National Guard Units in Danville, PA and Lewisburg, PA from 1953 to 1964.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ethel Jean O’Brien Schott whom he married May 8, 1954

Joseph owned and operated a general contracting business in the Danville area, for over 60 years. Joseph's expertise in the industry was admired by all who had the pleasure of collaborating with him. His craftsmanship and attention to detail were evident in the numerous homes he built, leaving a lasting legacy in the community.

He was an active member of Sandy Run Camp in Renova, PA where he was loved by many and where he served as President for numerous years. His other memberships over the years included the Knights of Columbus, Danville Elks, and American Legion Post 40. Joseph served as a state committeeman for Montour County for several years.

One of Joseph’s greatest joys in life was woodworking, which was evident in his immaculate workshop where he created priceless treasures for his family and friends.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather who would always be there for anything that was needed. His gentle and selfless spirit will be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, MaryAnn Gillespie of Bloomsburg PA and one granddaughter, Julianne Gillespie, and her wife Sarah Gillespie of Virginia and one sister Irene Mescan.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph W. Schott in 2020, his grandson, Jonathan Gillespie in 2003 and his “favorite son-in-law”, Peter Gillespie in 2023. Joseph was also preceded in death by five siblings; Dorothy Gabriel, Mary Kay Mayan, William Schott, Jr., Margaret Dik and Thomas Schott, Sr.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Graveside Service to be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 2:00 PM at New Rosemont Cemetery Bloomsburg PA. Military rites will be accorded by Danville American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard and the United States Army Honor Guard.
