Obituary For Larry W. Rudy
Larry W. Rudy, 79, of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Emmanuel Nursing Center Danville, PA. He was born November 7, 1943, in Danville, PA, the son of the late George and Elsie Barnhart Rudy.
He graduated from Danville High School in 1962, where he received the honor of the Most Outstanding Athlete Award in his senior year. Larry received numerous honors during his high school seasons. As a basketball player, he was a three-year member of the varsity squad where he scored over 1000 points in his career. In his senior year, he served as a co-captain and was selected as a member of the 1962 National High School All-America Basketball team. He also received recognition from the AP, UPI and Central Press as a member of several all-star teams. Larry’s accomplishments where equally impressive off the hardcourt and on the gridiron, where he was selected for the National High School All-America Football Team and played as a member of the East Squad for the annual Big 33 game held in Hershey.
Larry proudly served his country in the National Guard.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Carol Vogel Rudy whom he married November 20, 1965.
Larry was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church Danville, PA. He was also a 50-year member of the Washington Rod and Gun Club and a member of East End Fire Company.
Larry spent his career as a machinist, he spent many years at Smith Machine Works in Danville, PA and eventually retired from Kawneer in Bloomsburg, PA.
An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and camping. He was also a talented craftsman and enjoyed creating personalized walking sticks for many friends and family over the years.
Larry will be remembered for his authenticity and being an all-around good honest man. Lovingly referred to as “Papa” by his grandchildren, he rarely missed an opportunity to see them excel at their extracurricular activities. They all knew that he was their biggest supporter. He adored his family and will be dearly missed by them all.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Kristin Rudy Loadwick and her children, Miranda and Jake Loadwick, all of McLean, Virginia, one son, Scott Rudy and his wife Nicole and their children Gavin and Madison Rudy, all of Sykesville, MD. Larry is also survived by three brothers: Ron Rudy of Danville, PA, Richard Rudy and his wife Pat of Danville, PA and Leonard Rudy and his wife Harriet of Nashville, TN and two sisters Patricia Heimbach of Danville, PA and Linda Wedoff and her husband Steve of Rhode Island. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, George “Tom” Rudy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church 68 Center Street Danville, PA with the Reverend Timothy Marcoe as Celebrant. Entombment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery Columbarium will be private.
