Stephen L. Hurst, 55, of Sunbury, PA, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Sunbury Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born on July 11, 1971, in Bloomsburg, PA, the son of Harold H. Hurst (Ann) and Lorraine Hurst Baylor (Wayne); both of Danville, PA.

He loved fishing and hunting as a boy and teen and was active in the Backwoodsmen 4-H club. Steve attended Faith Chapel, Danville with his family. Upon graduation from Danville High School in 1990, he served his country with honor in the United States Navy completing Navy’s Nuclear “A” School, Nuclear Power School and the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory by 1992. After his training Steve spent four years on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier where he was deployed to many locations: the Persian Gulf, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Somalia, Australia, and Hawaii. After being honorably discharged in 1996 due to medical reasons, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 2005 from Bloomsburg University.

He found great joy in spending time with his uncles, sharing laughs and creating fond memories on the golf course. Steve was a member of Community Mennonite Fellowship, Milton, where he was involved with children ministries, VBS, and small group bible study. He was a volunteer for many years at Golden Rule Love, Inc., and HandUp Foundation, both of Milton, and volunteered at Camp Victory during bereavement week. Another joy in life was riding with his aunt, uncle and friends with the Christian Motorcycle Association.

After a car accident in 2010, he became a resident of Sunbury Skilled Nursing Facility. The nursing staff will hold special places in their hearts for Steve. He was known for his infectious smile and heart of goodness, and he took time to salute veterans with respect and gratitude. In 2016, Steve was privileged to attend a week-long Joni Erickson Tada handicapped family retreat in the Poconos with his mom and friends and thoroughly enjoyed it.

In addition to his parents, Steve will be loved and remembered by his sisters, Kathryn (Luke Stine), Delores (Michael Mills), and Louella (Blair Thompson) as well as an adored uncle to his nieces and nephews; Garrett, Olivia and Gage Rucker; Casey and Conner Mills, Emma and Norah Thompson; along with his closest friend and Navy comrade, John Wever (Vivi) of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Marie and his stepfather, Wayne Baylor.

Steve’s family extends their deepest gratitude and many thanks to the exceptional Sunbury Skilled Nursing Facility personnel and the dedicated Geisinger Hospice staff. Your profound love, compassion, and tireless care for Steve brought immense comfort to him and his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Stephen’s Life to be held on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at 3:30 PM at Community Mennonite Fellowship, (CMF), 2985 Broadway Road, Milton, PA. Friends will be received from 2:00 PM-3:15PM.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
