Obituary For Sterling Paul Black

Sterling Paul Black, 92, of Danville, PA, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Friday, March 3, 2023, at his residence. He was born September 7, 1930, in Canandaigua New York. He was the son of the late George W. and Margaret Shoemaker Black.

At the age of 17, and upon his mother’s signature, he joined the United States Navy where he honorably served his country for four years on the USS Greenwood. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Sterling was employed by TRW in Danville PA for more than 40 years, from where he retired.

Sterling was a member of Trinity Church of Danville PA, the Danville Elks, and the Danville Post 40 American Legion.

Sterling was a true gentleman who will be remembered by those who knew him for his sense of humor, quick wit, and kindness and concern for others. During his life he enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling, especially spending time with his beloved family and friends, and watching the Phillies play. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, the late Anna Weigold Black who passed away in 2008. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Elizabeth Turner Nevius and one son, Thomas H. Black and his wife Jody of Danville PA and four daughters: Christine A. Rossnock of Murrells Inlet, SC; Carol B. Westwood and her husband Tim of Pittsburgh PA, Lois B. Baylor and her husband Robby of Williamsport PA and Sharon K. Black of West Deptford NJ. Also surviving is his stepdaughter, Christine Lee and her husband Kevin of Riverside and one son-in-law, David Diehl of Danville PA as well as 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Anna, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy D. Diehl in 2014 and four brothers: Clarence, Wilbur, Marvin and Howard Black as well as three sisters: Mildred, Dorothy, and Erma.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Sterling’s Life to be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Trinity Church 84 Lombard Avenue, Danville PA with Pastor David Layser officiating. Burial will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery Danville PA. Full military rites will be accorded by Danville American Legion Post 40 Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends will be received from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM at the church.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Geisinger Hospice 74 Schoolhouse Road Suite 104 Danville PA 17821.
